Coach: Tom Ostheimer (7th year)
Last year: (11-4-2)
Key returnees: Mackenzie Flynn, Sr., D; Sophie Leamon, Sr., F; Miranda Bucky, Sr.; MF; Alex Delano, Sr., MF.
The Mount Greylock girls soccer team returns four senior captains to a team that was one game away from the Western Mass. D-II finals in 2012.
The Mounties move into the North Division this season and Ostheimer said he's looking forward to the challenge of facing some of the best teams in the county more regularly.
With seven returning starters, Ostheimer said his team will be solid at each level of the formation.
At forward, the team is returning its top two scorers in Kelsey Orpin and Sophie Leamon. Leamon found the net the most with eight goals and one assist. Orpin was right behind with seven goals, but she had five helpers. Greylock will need to look for some secondary scoring to replace what Alex Majetich (7g, 3a) gave them through the first half of the season before a concussion forced her out.
In the middle, Ostheimer said midfielders Miranda Bucky and Melissa Swann will anchor the middle with Swann playing on the outside. They'll be tasked with setting up Orpin and Leamon behind the opposiiton's defense.
The defense could be the strength of the team as that line is mostly intact from last year, with Mackenzie Flynn moving into the sweeper role and goalkeeper Charlotte Rand replacing five-year starter Margot Besnard.
Ostheimer said he expects contributions from several new players, specifically eighth-graders Mae Burris-Wells and Caroline Flynn.
