Coach: Andy Waluszko (6th year)
Last year: 13-2-3
Key returnees: Meghan Driscoll Sr., D; Kara Alfonsi, Sr., MF; Nicole Alfonsi Sr., F; Morgan Matthews, Sr., D; Allie Supranowicz Sr., MF.
Walusko and the Pittsfield Lady Generals were a penalty shootout away from becoming Division I Western Mass. champions last season.
With 10 seniors returning, they represent the largest senior class during Walusko's tenure at Pittsfield. Pittsfield is also returning nine starters and the Generals could be poised for a return trip to the Western Mass. finals.
That core group gained valuable playoff experience last year, not just because it made it tot he final, but how it won to get there. Pittsfield won a pair of games by one goal. The first was a 1-0 shutout before a 2-1 overtime victory put them in the title game.
Defense will again be the backbone. Pittsfield recorded 12 shutouts and allowed only seven goals all season. With seniors Meghan Driscoll (sweeper) and Matthews (stopper) back in the middle of the back line, opponents will be forced to attack from the outside, which immediately cuts down the threat level. Behind them, sophomore Allie Hunt returns to be the last line of defense.
On offense, Pittsfield returns 45 goals from last year's team as 12 different players scored goals last season. Look for forwards Nicole Alfonsi and Amanda Wright along with midfielders Kara Alfonsi and Supranowicz to add a scoring punch.
Walusko said he's looking forward to a tough non-league schedule that should prepare his team for another Western Mass. playoff run.
