While the numbers of the boys soccer team at Lee are still low, head coach Murphy believes the mix of new additions and returning players will lead to a more competitive season.
Heading into the 2013 season, there was doubt whether the school would field a team at all. But after the addition of key freshmen players and athletes from other sports choosing to play soccer, Lee was able to field a team this season.
Murphy credits the incoming players with saving the program. While depth may not be a strength for the Wildcats - the team will have to replace Heamon Williams, who left the Lee goal to join the football program - youth can be looked upon as a positive. Murphy said he's looking forward to having the freshmen grow in the program, and expects them to contribute right away.
Freshmen such as forward Luke Murphy will be looked upon to score for the Wildcats and replace the 13 goals of John Graziano from last season. Murphy is also the team's leading returning assist man, with five in 2012. Mejia is the team's second-best returning goal scorer, with six last season. Senior Jake Simon will be a key member of the defense, while junior Nick Powell will be directing the attack on offense. Both Simon and Powell will be looked to provide leadership for their younger teammates, in addition to anchoring their spot on the field.
