Coach Matt Naventi and the Monument Mountain boys soccer team enter the season with high expectations.
With a large senior class (16) returning to a squad that was a finalist in the Western Massachusetts Division II tournament, a championship could be in the future for the Spartans.
Seniors Powell and Giles, as well as junior Plishtin, lead the team up the middle. Naventi said the midfielders will be the focus of the team with the offense being funneled through them.
This year, the Spartans plan to play at a slower pace, looking to take control of possessions instead of running when given the opportunity.
On defense, senior Bobby Kinne looks to hold down the back line, while leading returning scorer senior forward Wartella (9 goals) and junior Myers lead the charge at the forward spots. Wartella was also a facilitator, returning as the team's leading assist man with eight.
Depth is another strong point. With healthy numbers during preseason camp, Naventi said there will be quality players who will have to bide their time behind veterans. With a strong 25-man roster, Naventi said deciding the final varsity roster was a tough decision.
