Can they do it again?
That's been the question the Mounties have faced at the outset of the last two seasons. They answered each time with a resounding yes. They have now won the last three Berkshire County championships and Western Mass. Division III Super Bowls. The only blip the last three seasons has been the end of their county-best winning and unbeaten streak, which ended at 33 consecutive victories.
With the pressure of the streak gone, Greylock can turn its full attention to a state title. In order to get there, they'll almost certainly need to duplicate last season's success. A brand new interior offensive line paved the way for Ethan Ryan to rush for the county's first-ever 2,000-yard campaign. The core of that group returns this year with Daivon Clement in at tailback - he was Ryan's fullback last year.
That same group of lineman was a brick wall on defense in 2012, too. Opponents can expect to have about the same difficulty moving the ball again this season.
Quarterback Brodie Altiere gained valuable experience taking over for an injured Hank Barrett for the final four games of 2012. It's now his turn to steer the ship.
If the Mounties have a weakness, it's depth. Flaherty said they're a little thin in positions. Injuries - as they almost always do - may play a bigger role in the season's outcome.
