Coach: Gary Campbell (2nd year)
Last year: 9-3
Key returnees: Ethan Wells, Sr., QB/LB; Darrow Brown, Sr., WR/FS; Eli Pease, Sr., RB/SS; Codi Arthur, Sr., RB/DE; Marco Anastasio, Jr., G/LB; Sean Rice, Jr., G/DT
Campbell's first year back in the Berkshires couldn't have gone much better. His Warriors ended the longest winning and unbeaten streak in county history and went on to win the Western Mass. Division II Super Bowl. Not a bad return.
The 2013 Warriors will be hard-pressed to follow that up. Wahconah is the lone Berkshire County team in Division IV (all teams have been reclassified for the new statewide playoff system). They dive head-first into their schedule with a pair of divisional matchups. The first is the Route 9 Rumble with Northampton, followed up by Chicopee Comp.
Helping to lead the way back to Gillette Stadium is a core group of upperclassmen, many of which return at the skill positions. Pease and Arthur are back and figure to be the top running backs. That's because Wells has taken a few steps forward to run the pistol offense now that Lane Grogan is gone. Wells has a couple of big targets on the outside in Brown and Kyle Kirchner, both of whom stand about 6-feet tall, if not a little more.
It's the group in front of the skill players, the ones in the trenches where the Warriors are a little thin on experience. They graduated a pair of linemen and their tight end, which mean juniors Anastasio and Rice will anchor the line. Senior Mike Shaughnessy is also back.
On defense, it's much of the same story. Arthur and Rice will be the leaders on the line with Arthur playing an end after spending last season as a linebacker and Rice on the interior. Anastasio and Wells will be the big tacklers, both playing a linebacker spot. Brown and Pease will patrol the deep routes in the secondary.
