Coach: Ron Namislo (22nd year)
Last year: 6-9
Key returnees: Travis Ciempa, Jr.; Trevor Ciempa, Jr.; Jared Haley, So.; Chris Cardimino, Sr.
Hoosac is strong at the top. Travis and Trevor Ciempa are returning state qualifiers who both finished in the top 135 at the Division II state meet last year, with Travis finishing 32nd overall.
Travis is one of the top juniors in a county loaded with 11th-grade strength. He estimates he ran between 35-40 miles per week this summer, and said anyone who put in that kind of work is in position to win often this fall.
"I think it'll be fun not knowing who's [going to win]," he said. Trevor missed much of last season due to injury, but was a solid runner at season's end.
If there's one sophomore in the county who could surprise, it's Haley. He may have only been Hoosac Valley's No. 4 runner in last year's Western Mass. Division II meet, but he was 18th overall - a show of how strong the Hurricanes finished 2012. He was also the Hurricanes' fastest finisher at the Aug. 31 scrimmage meet at Greylock, taking third place overall behind Lenox's Tucker McNinch and Greylock's Carter Stripp.
Travis Ciempa was right behind Haley, which bodes well for Hoosac. The pair could be one of the best in the Berkshires.
