Perhaps no team has to replace as much senior leadership as the Generals. Six of their top runners in the 2012 Berkshire County championship race have graduated. Those seniors led Pittsfield to a third-place team finish in the Western Mass. Division I meet, and a berth in the state meet a week later.
For that reason, Ortega was initially apprehensive about the success the Generals would have in 2013. His fears, though, seem to have faded a bit as the season draws closer.
"From the past two weeks of practice, I think we'll be OK," the coach said. "We'll be competitive."
Coles and Leary bring back the most experience this season, and are likely candidates to be Pittsfield's top two runners. The focus, though, is on runners 3 through 7 - specifically, who they are and how good they can be.
Ortega said he has a couple of freshmen who also show some promise early in the season, and could be in the fold later this fall.
"Once they get the gist of [a race] ... they'll understand what it's all about," the coach said. "They have to get one of those races under their belt. I think the whole team does, actually."
