Monument Mountain returns a veteran but improving squad which performed very well in the Western Mass. Division II meet at hilly Northfield Recreation Center, finishing third as a team and qualifying for states along with Lenox and Mount Greylock. At states in Northfield, they finished 18th as a team.
Greylock coach Larry Bell feels that Monument has a chance to a force to be reckoned with this year.
"They are one good athlete away from stealing Pittsfield's crown," he said.
The Spartans will lean on senior Heather Hassett for veteran leadership. Hassett performed well in the Western Mass. meet with a fifth place finish (21:00.73), less than two minutes off the pace of the winner, Natalie Mako of Frontier.
Hassett was the top Berkshire County runner in the preseason scrimmage, only 17 seconds off the lead pace.
Junior Jordan Begley showed marked improvements in her sophomore year, finishing in the top ten in the county championships last fall.
While Maeve Wilber will not be returning to the team this fall, the Spartans still feature a deep squad of 26 runners this fall, and with 12 sophomores on the rise, seem to be well-stocked to make a run at a county championship in the next few years.
