A photo caption in the Oct. 29 edition of the Transcript erroneously stated that Nor thern Berkshire Habitat for Humanity "donates" homes, in reference to the Briggs family’s new home on Main Street in Williamstown.
NBHH President and Project Manager Paul Austin recently set the record straight in a letter to the Transcript: By no means a donation; families selected by NBHH must have the ability to pay a mortgage, property taxes, homeowner’s insurance, water and sewer bills and utilities. Selected families must participate in the construction of their home, toward a minimum of 500 hours of sweat equity. The Briggs family logged nearly 800 hours.
NBHH provides an interest-free mortgage and removes the cost of construction labor through volunteers.
