POWNAL, Vt. -- Northern Landscape Services has been bought by a New York company that plans to hire 10 more employees.
Brendan Gallivan, of Gallivan Corporation in Troy, N.Y., said the deal was closed Nov. 1 and had been part of his company’s plans to expand into Vermont and Massachusetts for some time.
Gallivan said his company acquired all of Northern Landscape’s assets, including its physical location in Pownal and its equipment.
He said Northern Landscape had about 15 employees, all of which have been retained, and he plans to hire 10 more. Those positions will be everything from designers to supervisors to laborers. Gallivan Corporation has roughly 95 employees and offers a variety of landscaping services, including design work, masonry, outdoor lighting, planting, fertilizing and maintenance. He said they serve a mix of residential and corporate clients, and hope to work as far north as Manchester, Vt., and into Pittsfield, Mass.
"We are very diverse," Gallivan said. Gallivan said he started his landscaping company when he was 14 years old and has been at it for the past 19 years. His brother also owns a similar company, working on moving landscaping supplies.
"We see an opportunity," he said. "We are excited about the area."
Gallivan said the past four years have been tough for landscapers who have had to trim down their operations. He said this chance to expand should be good for all involved
Gallivan said he intends to upgrade the Vermont company’s vehicles and equipment as well as to extensively renovate the Pownal office.
He would not disclose financial details of the transaction.
Brian O’Neil is the former owner of Northern Landscape Services.
"This is a competitive marketplace and Gallivan Corporation by far has the reputation, resources and leadership to grow and expand in this region. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished in nearly 18 years of business, creating sustainable landscapes that fulfill property owners’ needs in Berkshire County and beyond," said O’Neil in a released statement. "I have no doubt Gallivan Corporation will continue to do the same."
