CHESHIRE -- The Rod & Gun Club hosted its annual fishing derby on Cheshire Lake all day Sunday, where a 40-inch, 16-pound pike won the day.
Bill Adelt, of Willow Cove, won $100 and the respect of the near 100 other fishermen who turned out in frigid weather for the event.
Other prize winners included John Lacasse and Deanna Trumble with the runner-up and third place pike; George Bauman won the bass category with a 20-inch, 4-pound, 4-ounce fish, with Wyatt Furey and Den Noel being the runners-up; and Mike Goodermote caught the biggest pickerel, a 21-inch, 2-pound, 8-ounce fish.
The club’s Vice President William Bolotin said everyone happily took to the ice again after the event was canceled in 2012 because of warm weather. The lake wasn’t even frozen last February.
"It was a nice day: no rain, no sleet, no snow. Just very cold," Bolotin said.
The season has bounced back this year, Bolotin added.
"The fishing was good this year," Bolotin said. "Anything’s an improvement over no ice. But everything’s been well stocked and I know a lot of guys have had good seasons."
Sunday’s derby was followed by dinner and prizes for the young participants. Of these, Noah Metrigali caught the biggest fish: a 16 inch bass weighing more than 2 pounds.
