HANCOCK -- Two incumbents have been re-elected to the School Committee in what was the only contested race in Tuesday's local election.
Robert Smith and Melissa Leab were re-elected for three-year terms with 85 and 110 votes, respectively. Smith and Leab beat newcomer Bruce Gregorek, who received 61 votes.
Selectman Art Williams was re-elected for a three-year term, receiving 132 votes.
Two open seats on the Board of Health were filled by incumbent Melanie Jackson, who received 133 votes, and Peter Morin, who received 121 votes.
In addition, the following incumbents were re-elected: Constable, Mark Gaskill, 128 votes; library trustee, Kathleen Gideon, 127; Cemetery Commission, Benjamin Cassavaugh, 129; Board of Assessors, Rene Hanson, 127; tax collector, Julie Williams, 124; treasurer, Joan Burdick, 125; town clerk, Linda Burdick, 132.
Of the town's 502 registered voters, 137, or 27 percent, turned out for the election, Town Clerk Linda Burdick said.
Burdick said there were write-in candidates for three-year terms on both the Finance Committee and Planning Board. Those elections are conditional upon whether the person accepts the position, she said.
Burdick said she was pleased to see more voters from south Hancock at the election. Residents who live near Route 20, she explained, needed to go through New York in order to get to the Hancock Central School on Route 43 as there's no road connecting the two highways.
"They're probably coming about 16 miles, so they're making a 30-mile round-trip to vote," Burdick said.
