NORTH ADAMS -- A unique "Calcutta" fundraiser, which offers the chance of winning $1,000 or numerous other prizes, is being held by Northern Berkshire United Way on Friday as the organization enters the final leg of its annual fundraising campaign.
The fundraiser, which runs from 5 to 9 p.m. at Mount Greylock Bowl and Golf, is limited to 150 tickets, being sold at $50 each.
"It's a first for all of us," Rob Abel, who is serving as campaign co-chair with Ozzie Alveraz, said Wednesday. "We think it's unique, different and exciting. Everyone has golf tournaments, and while I love a good golf game, we wanted to do something different."
He said the night will begin at 5 p.m. with ticket holders receiving free bowling and free time on the golf simulators. A cash bar and light hors d'oeuvres will also be available.
"The exciting part begins at 7 p.m. when all 150 tickets go into the drawing," Abel said. "As the tickets are drawn, you may or may not win a prize. When we get down to the last 10 tickets, we'll be drawing for the $1,000 prize. Those last 10 participants will have the choice to split the prize. If one person disagrees, we pull a ticket and that person is out. From there we go on until the group decides to share the prize or one ticket is left."
As an added bonus, an anonymous donor has pledged to match the fundraiser -- giving $2,500 to the campaign -- should all 150 tickets sell.
"We've sold almost 100 tickets already," he said. "If we sell all 150 we'll not only receive the $2,500 donation, but we'll be inching ever so close to our goal. This event might help get us to our goal or over it. We've already surpassed last year's fundraising goal."
Last year the campaign raised $524,000, which was distributed among the Northern Berkshire United Way's (NBUW) 21 member organizations. This year's campaign goal is $550,000.
"It looks live we've received over 90 percent of our goal for this campaign," NBUW Executive Director Joseph McGovern said Wednesday. "We won't know the total amount raised until our annual celebration breakfast on May 30, but we're pretty confident we'll get to our goal. This could be the first time in five years that we could surpass our goal."
He added, "We've had some really good stories come out of the campaign this year -- a lot of local employers and employees have stepped up. It's been a lot of fun."
