Saturday's impending storm will give North County track and field athletes an extra couple days to prepare for the Western/Central Massachusetts track and field meet.
The decision was made to postpone the event from its originally scheduled day of Saturday until Monday on Friday. The Division II meet will now take place at Westfield State University with a start time of 1 p.m. Division I will start at 1 p.m. at Fitchburg State.
Western Massachusetts track and field director Tom Stewart said the decision was made in conjunction with the six other tournament directors.
Stewart said by phone that he had been in contact with Dr. Karl Leiker, who heads the weather department at Westfield State, and they have been watching the weather all week long.
"[Saturday] is supposed to be raining and cold," Stewart said. "We don't want athletes to go run in the rain and cold. That's not good for anyone and we're here for the kids. We want them to have a good time."
Saturday's high temperature is predicted to be in the 50s, as is Sunday's. Monday is expected to be sunny and in the low 70s.
Being Memorial Day, the decision was made for a later start.
Stewart made his decision to postpone the event at 6:30 a.m. Friday and by 11 all the directors had agreed it was the right one.
"When you're a little kid, you always want the ability to cancel school because of a snow storm or something like that," Stewart joked. "But when you're a big kid, it's a pain. Because of everything that is actually involved. You want to make sure you get it right."
