STAMFORD, Vt. -- Seven children from the Stamford School who will be entering third grade in the fall took part in a demonstration given Tuesday at Wilmington High School by Dr. George Cunningham, professor of mathematics at the University of Maine. The local children participating were Brian Bilger, Richard Boisvert, Michael Emmons, Nancy Fabricius, Martha Finney, Steven Lesure and Lauren Whitham. NORTH ADAMS -- Ronald Mativi, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Mativi of 145 State Road, has been promoted to utilities man third class at the U.S. Naval Base in Camp Kinser, Okinawa. He enlisted in the Navy in July, 1960 and was trained at the plumbing, air conditioning and refrigeration school at Port Huneme, Calif.

ADAMS -- TSgt. Joseph Lavigne, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Lavigne of Adams, was recently awarded the John Levitow Award for academic excellence. He is the Non-Commissioner Officer in Charge of Data Automation at Florennes Air Base in Florennes, Belgium. He received the award for graduating at the top of his class of 108 students.
ADAMS -- Degere Bus beat Stanley Lumber, 13-4, in Adams Little League play. Brent Leonesio was the winning pitcher. Kevin O'Connor led the winners with four hits, including a double. Leonesio had two hits, including a triple. Rene Koscinski also had two hits. Aaron Girgenti had two hits for Stanley Lumber.

NORTH ADAMS -- In Northern Berkshire Women's Softball, Gringos beat Ruff Cuts, 20-3. Sue Ameen went 3-for-5 with a grand slam for the winners. Mary Scanlon had a 2-for-5 day, including a home run. Missy Parisien and Chris Howard chipped in with three hits each. Donna Benoit earned the win on the mound. For Ruff Cuts, Amy Lewitt went 2-for-3, and was charged with the loss on the mound.
NORTH ADAMS -- Two teams of students from McCann Technical High School won awards at the 2003 Skills USA Championships held Saturday in Kansas City, Mo. A team consisting of Jesse Liebenow, Michael Thoresen and Carlton Blak was awarded the Secondary Gold medal in Automated Manufacturing Technology. Another team, consisting of Amanda Beverly, Lee Girard, Katie Goodermote, Kayleigh Troop and Monica Zustra was awarded the Secondary Silver medal in Total Quality Management.
