NORTH ADAMS -- City police broke up a "50-person brawl" at Joe Wolfe Field on Wednesday, a fight that was reportedly sparked by an illegal pitch.
"From what was reported, that was the cause," North Adams Police Det. John LeClair said Thursday.
According to Wednesday's police log, officers responded to the scene at 9:07 p.m.
Sgt. James Burdick said "everybody on shift" -- a total of four officers -- responded to the melee.
"We were greatly outnumbered, but were able to get it under control," Burdick said.
No charges have yet resulted from the fight and no serious injuries were reported, but North Adams Men's Softball League play has been suspended indefinitely.
