NORTH ADAMS -- Police are looking for a man they say was involved in an attempted armed robbery Monday night at the Brayton Hill Apartment complex.
According to North Adams Police Sgt. James Burdick, the suspect is described as an African-American male in his late 20s. He's approximately 5-foot-8 with a skinny build, wearing a "skull cap" underneath a baseball cap, jeans and a white T-shirt.
The suspect is described as having a Jamaican accent with a severe speech impediment, according a press release.
Shortly before 9 p.m., a taxi driver from the Yellow Cab Company in Hartford, Conn., told police he had driven a man from Hartford to the Brayton Hill Apartments. When the vehicle stopped, the man he had picked up brandished a knife and demanded money.
The driver told police he refused to give the man any money and in the struggle suffered minor cuts to his hand, but didn't' require medical attention.
The suspect fled with the taxi driver's cell phone.
Members of the Adams Police Department, Massachusetts State Police, Williamstown Police and their K-9 unit, the State Police Air Wing and the State Police Crime Scene Services searched the area around the apartment complex for several hours Monday night but were unable to locate the suspect.
Burdick said the investigation is ongoing and the department is looking for public input. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the North Adams Police Department at 413-664-4944.
Monday's robbery is the latest in a string of violent events that have taken place this summer.
Police continue to investigate an armed robbery which took place on Aug. 17, at the Corner Market on Holden and River Streets. Police are still searching for the two males, both approximately 5-foot-9, who were armed with a knife and a handgun. During the robbery the two suspects stole an undisclosed amount of cigarettes, lottery tickets and cash.
Police say the suspects tied up a 44-year-old woman, the only person working at the store. The woman suffered only minor injuries, police said.
