SAVOY -- A chimney fire grew into a structure fire and damaged a house on River Road Sunday morning.
Peter "P.J." Miner, assistant chief of the Savoy Volunteer Fire Department, said Monday the department was called to the home around 7 a.m., and upon arrival, discovered fire had spread from a wood stove chimney to the wall behind it.

Full Story NORTH ADAMS -- A local man is being held by police on $1,000 bail after he was allegedly involved in an altercation with a juvenile and then damaged a motor vehicle on Saturday night.
Jason E. Welsh, 19, has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and wanton destruction of property over $250.

NORTH ADAMS -- Marine Pvt. William Dingas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Dingas of 11 Adams St., is home on a 20-day leave. He has completed boot training at Parris Island, S.C., and advanced training at Camp Lejeune, N.C. At leave’s end he will report to the Marine Air Detachment, Naval Air Technical Training Center, Jacksonville, Fla.

Full Story NORTH ADAMS -- Two local men were taken to the hospital on Friday afternoon after a two-car accident at the intersection of Church and Quincy Streets.
Joshua M. Wimpenney, 23, and his passenger, Jonathan Wimpenney, were taken to North Adams Regional Hospital with unknown injuries after the black 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee he was driving collided with a gray 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Two Vermont men will be summoned to court after they were involved in a three-car accident on Simonds Road on Friday afternoon.
Edward T. Belville, 30, of Pownal, Vt. will be charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and failure to keep right for an oncoming motor vehicle.

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Pupils of Williamstown High School met in assembly yesterday at the Mitchell School for the purpose of awarding school letters and certificates to members of the football squad. Gold Oscars went to the four co-captains, John MacLean, James Grady, Robert Winton and Philip Talarico.

Several callers related that Mr. Ziter also taught belly dancing and Middle Eastern dancing, which he learned from his mother, Priscilla, an accomplished dancer herself.

HOOSICK, N.Y. -- A man who pleaded guilty in January to stabbing a horse to death was sentenced Thursday in Rensselaer County Court to serve 3 1/2 to 7 years in prison, under a plea agreement.
Michael Lohnes, 26, had pleaded guilty to burglary, criminal mischief and aggravated cruelty to an animal.
