50 years ago today

NORTH ADAMS -- The Police Department’s reserve ranks have been filled to the authorized number of eight with the announcement that three local men have been added. The new reserves are Robert Perry of 1489 Massachusetts Ave., Paul Danis of 17 Wall St. and Rodney Prevey of 93 Walker St. ADAMS -- An Adams man who enlisted in the Navy nearly 30 months ago has been assigned to duty in the Philippines. The Navy announced that Walter Matuszak, electronics technician, seaman and son of Mrs. Anna Matuszak of 12 Clifford Lane, has arrived there and is now serving at the Sangley Naval Point Station. Matuszak enlisted Sept. 23, 1959 and received his basic training at Great Lakes (Ill.) Naval Training Center.

NORTH ADAMS -- The 1986-87 Drury wrestling team tied for second in the league and placed fourth in Western Mass. Members of the team are Bill Morocco, Mike Masse, Ron Keefer, Steve Potvin, Mike Maroni, John Gwozdz, Jeff Hickey, Arlen Cellana, Jason Griffen, Jason DePaulis, Mike Beaudry, Bob Hancock, Steve Milette, John Trombley, Chris George, Matt Lampiasi, Todd Gotzens, Trevor Burdick, John Valliers, Tom Andrews, Todd Hamilton, Scott Filkins, Eric Scarpitto, Vinnie King and Derek Masse.

NORTH ADAMS -- Anne Bence of North Adams is currently presenting her "relief canvas" style of artwork at the Dietel Gallery in Troy, N.Y. The exhibit will continue through

March 13. Ms. Bence’s works include drawings in carbon pencil, graphite, pen and ink and mixed media, and also includes canvasses utilizing acrylics and oils.

NORTH ADAMS -- Six members of the Northern Berkshire YMCA Betta Swim Team competed in the 20th annual Valentine Invitational held Feb. 10 at the Pittsfield YMCA. Over 200 swimmers from the region competed. The Betta members were Erica Mach, Kailey Pero, Britnee Bohl, Kelsey Pero, Dylan Straczek and David Button.

ADAMS -- Lisa Gordon of Kerr Avenue earned dean’s list standing for the fall semester of the Bay Path College "One-Day-A-Week-College" program. The accelerated degree program meets on Saturdays only, and allows adult women the opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree in just three-and-a-half years or less or an associate degree in one-and-a-half years. Gordon is enrolled in the business/executive management program.
