ADAMS -- Four contractors submitted bids to perform roadway and infrastructure repairs at the Greylock Glen, arriving at Town Hall on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m., when bidding for the project was scheduled to open.
Bidding companies included Warner Bros., Inc of Sunderland at $1,738,637.50; D.R. Billings, Inc., of Laneborough, at $1,296,946.35; C & A Construction, of Ludlow. at $1,640,065, and J.H. Maxymillian, Inc., of Pittsfield, at $1,735,760.50. A total of $2 million was allotted to the project in Gov. Deval Patrick's supplemental budget, with a clause requiring that work begin by spring of this year.
Community Development Director Donna Cesan said the bids allowed for the start of work at the site.
"It appears the funding is in place, so that's really great news," she said. "From here we'll send the bids to an engineer for careful review of the details and numbers, and they'll send back a recommendation sometime next week."
Cesan added that after a first look at the bids, it appears the budget could allow additional work and potentially further repairs to the intersection at Gould Farm and West Road.
The project calls for repairs and repaving on Gould Road and Thiel Road and utility upgrades along the same stretch, and comprises what officials call "Phase 1" of the entire Greylock Glen improvement project. Total infrastructure repairs at the site are estimated at upwards of $4 million, but officials believe
"It's important to work towards making the Greylock Glen shovel-ready, because we're seeking private developers to undertake different projects at the site, and the town creates incentives for other work if the permitting is in place and all developers have to deal with is their own site," Cesan said.
Some developments desired for the site include a campground, a performing arts amphitheater, 165 lodging units and an education center.
The Department of Con servation and Recreation is scheduled to begin improving existing trails and clearing a network of new trails at the site in June.
Cesan has previously stated her belief that grant funds will be awarded to cover the cost of the entirety of needed infrastructure repairs.
