50 years ago today

NORTH ADAMS -- A North Adams coast guardsman who has figured in many ocean rescues during his 3 1/2 years of service, has been awarded the Coast Guard’s Good Conduct Medal. He is Emil Begiebing Jr., electrician’s mate 1st class and son of Mr. and Mrs. Begiebing of 178 Prospect St. He enlisted in the Coast Guard Nov. 18, 1958 and had 16 weeks of basic training at Cape May, N.J. NORTH ADAMS -- Cub Scout Pack 64 of Notre Dame School held a pack meeting last evening in the Notre Dame Parish Hall which featured an awards ceremony. Commissioner Harvey Babeu presented the bobcat pin to Joseph Piano and Daniel Clermont, wolf badge to Peter Trudeau and wolf gold arrow to Paul Dupuis.

NORTH ADAMS -- Charles Jones Jr., manager of the JC Penney department store at 99 Main St., is a winner of the JC Penney Chairman’s Award for managerial excellence. In winning the award, Mr. Jones’ store finished among the top one-third of the company’s 1,400 stores nationwide in productivity.

ADAMS -- Incumbent Harold Scarbo handily defeated Joseph Dean for the one Prudential Committee seat contested in the Adams Fire District election Monday. Mr. Scarbo received 390 votes to Mr. Dean’s 125. In the only other contest, Mark Chittenden defeated Paul Horbal, 276 to 225, for a three-year term as fourth assistant

NORTH ADAMS -- Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts has inducted several local students into Delta Mu Delta, the national honor society, in business administration. The local students are Beverly Bayliss of North Adams, Nancy Crouse of Cheshire, Tami Levesque of Adams and Nelson Ogert Jr. of Clarksburg.

NORTH ADAMS -- Marine Corps Pfc. Daniel Burdick, son of Patricia LaFreniere of Waynesville, Ga. and Lawrence Burdick of North Adams, recently was deployed to a combined arms exercise at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, Calif. During the eight-week long exercise, Burdick and his fellow Marines conducted tactical training and operations with other units using various weapons, tactical vehicles and artillery to improve combat readiness.
