50 years ago today

NORTH ADAMS -- Seaman Edward Moreau Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Moreau of 123 Beaver St., is home on two weeks’ leave from the U.S. Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Md., where he has been stationed for the past four months. The young Navy seaman enlisted last December and had boot training at Great Lakes, Ill. He is assigned to the supply department. CHESHIRE -- Seaman John Bartlett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Gregory of North State Road, will report to the Naval Air Station Memphis, Tenn., for a special tour of duty Saturday. The young sailor enlisted in the Navy May 28 for a period of three years and has spent the last two weeks with his family since completing recruit training at the Navy’s Great Lakes (Ill.) Training Center.

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Kim Chapman and Paula Bartlett combined for a better ball 70, winning the mixed member-guest tournament at Taconic Golf Club. The teams of Al Michaud and Mona Wheeler and Ed Czarnecki and Kiyoko Mills tied for second with 74. Jen and Richard Noel got net honors with 58.

NORTH ADAMS -- The North Adams Garden Club recognized outstanding gardeners from each of the city’s voting wards in its "Garden Beautiful" contest. Special awards were presented to Jos eph Fachini, Mayor John Bar rett, John Bourdon, Margaret LeClair, Father Gosselin, Eve Crowley, Ellen Sindermann and Eleanor

NORTH ADAMS -- Keith Bona, owner of Proforma Uni versal Marketing at 40 Eagle St., was honored by Pro forma with the Family Service Award. He was presented the award during the recognition banquet in Balti more. Bona’s efforts raised over $15,000 for the Daniel H. Petithory Mem orial Fund, a fund created by the family of a local soldier who lost his life in Afghan istan.

ADAMS -- After a 25-year career with the Adams Police D epartment, Chief Norman Schutz has announced his plans to retire by the end of this year. Schutz, 51, the town’s police chief for the past 3 1/2 years, said his official retirement date is Dec. 31. He attended the Police Academy in Framingham, obtained an associated degree in Criminal Justice from Berkshire Com munity College and graduated from Westfield State College with a bachelor’s degree.
