50 years ago today

NORTH ADAMS -- Pvt. James Miller, U.S. Marine Corps, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray mond Miller of 114 Corinth St., has completed his recruit training at the Parris Island Recruit Depot and has been sent to Camp Lejeune, N.C. for combat infantry training. He expects to complete that course and come home on leave at the end of the month, then start aviation school training.

NORTH ADAMS -- Staff Sgt. Edward Gomeau, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Gomeau of 35 Jackson St., has re-enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps for six additional years. A veteran of nine years of service, Sgt. Go meau first enlisted in August, 1953 and received his basic training at Parris Island, S.C. He is serving a tour of recruiting duty in Bellingham, Wash.

25 years ago today

ADAMS -- The law firm of Donovan and O’Connor an nounced that William Adams of Plainfield joined the firm Sept. 3 as an associate. Mr. Adams, 34, graduated in 1986 cum laude from Western New Eng land College of Law, where he received the Corpus Juris Se cundum Prize for Significant Legal Scholarship and the Am erican Jurisprudent Award for Family Law.

NORTH ADAMS -- North Adams has a new addition as Aubuchon Hardware opens its Union Street doors to the public. Store owner William Aub uchon said he is pleased with the reception he has gotten in North Adams. He also has a store in Williamstown.

CHESHIRE -- In Cheshire Youth Football action, Che shire defeated Lee in the Jun ior Division, 26-0. Jeremy Pierce, Dalton Larabee and Travis Manning all had touchdowns. Santino Messer added a two-point conversion. The offensive line of Aaron Bras sard, Mike Fillion, Andrew Heath, Tyler Krutiak and Pierce was strong.

NORTH ADAMS -- Air Force Tech. Sgt. Michael Varno, son of Jane and W.A. Varno of D Street, has de ployed for a forward operating location to support the mission of Operation Enduring Free dom. The sergeant is a field communications supervisor regularly assigned to the 40th Flight Test Flight Squadron at Eglin Air Force Base in Val paraiso, Fla. Varno is a 1987 graduate of McCann Technical High School.
