50 years ago today

ADAMS -- Daniel Bialas, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bialas of 3 Dubis St., has been promoted to airman, first class. He is a radar electronics maintenance man and is stationed in England. He enlisted in the Air Force Sept. 15, 1960 and had basic training at Lackland Air Force Base and completed an electronics course at Keesler AFB. WILLIAMSTOWN -- Marine Cpl. James Burdick Jr., son of Mr. and Mr. J. Everett Burdick of 2 Berkshire Dr., is serving with Marine All-Weather Fighter Squadron 531 at the Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point, N.C. Cpl. Burdick entered the Mar ines in July, 1959. He expects to leave the service in about a year.

STAMFORD, Vt. -- Stam ford Elementary School Prin cipal Leo Ethier announced the Haviland family of Stam ford as winners of the school’s family Constitution Contest. Peter Haviland, his wife Char lotte Degan, and their two children, Colin, a second grader at the school, and E.J., 15 months, participated in the contest. The winners were presented a hard-bound copy of Rand McNally’s book "America."

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Waubeeka Golf Links has named its most improved golfers for the 1987 season. Bill Danaher, who has been playing for 30 years, was named the most improved men’s golfer at the course. Darcy Nagy, a daily player, was named women’s "most improved." Brothers

READSBORO, Vt. -- Two Readsboro Central School students have been awarded free season ski passes at the Mount Snow/Haystack Ski Are in West Dover. The passes are awarded as part of the resorts "Aiming for Excellence" program. In order to be eligible, the students had to attain highest honors in their school for three out of the last four marking periods.

NORTH POWNAL, Vt. -- Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class James Mottor, son of JoAnne and Mike Mottor of North Pownal, is halfway through a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Ara bian Gulf while assigned to Hel icopter Anti-Submarine Squad ron 15, embarked a board the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, homeported in Norfolk, Va. Mottor joined the Navy in August 1993.
