NORTH ADAMS -- A young North Adams Marine, Pfc. James Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Miller of 114th Corinth St., has completed his advanced combat training at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and has arrived home on a 20-day leave. At the conclusion of his leave, he will report for Aviation School training in Memphis, Tenn. WILLIAMSTOWN -- Seven seniors at Mt. Greylock Regional High School have been recognized for their high performance on the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test given last spring. They are Michael Dowhan, Richard Greene, Jill Hays, Jeffrey Gordon, Ann Scott, Gretchen Small and Richard Warriner. Each student will receive a formal letter of commendation signed by the principal and the president of National Merit Scholarship Corp.

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Carol DeMayo of Williams town has been awarded the Massachusetts 4-H Salute to Excellence award for her work as a Berkshire County 4-H adult volunteer. Her daughter, Carin DeMayo has re ceived a one-week educational trip to Chicago, Ill., to meet with project sponsors and compete for college scholarships.

NORTH ADAMS -- Henry Puppolo, president of the North Adams Sons of Italy Lodge 704, has announced that the Italian Culture Program has selected four individuals to receive the Columbus Award. The award is presented to individuals who have made significant, exemplary and

long-standing contributions to the North Adams Sons of Italy Lodge 704. This year’s recipients will be Alda Roy, Emma Gould, Angela Abuisi and Anthony Abuisi.

POWNAL, Vt. -- With four years of Arena Cross racing experience beneath his tires, a Mount Anthony High School senior is revved up for the Amateur Arena Cross World Finals Sunday in Las Vegas, Nev. Benedikt Schiermeyer of Pownal, 17, spent the last year racing his KTM 125 SX motorcycle at qualifiers in the United States and Canada.

NORTH ADAMS -- A Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts professor and national expert on psycholinguistics has written his first textbook. Dr. Timothy Jay, professor of psychology, authored "The Psychology of Language," which was recently published by Prentice-Hall. Dr. Jay has been with the Department of Psychology at MCLA since 1976.
