50 years ago today

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Staff Sgt. Kerwin Stackpoole, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Stackpoole of 8 Maple St., has completed a two-week stay with his parents. He enlisted for six more years in the U.S. Army. He entered the Army in 1955 after graduation from Williamstown High School and received training at Fort Dix, N.J. and Fort Monmouth, N.J.

NORTH ADAMS -- Lt. Henry Pierpan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Pierpan of 855 Massachusetts Ave., has been released from active duty in the U.S. Army and will join his father next week in the operation of the Harry J. Pierpan Insurance Agency Inc. at 7 Holden St. A graduate of Drury High School in 1955 and Norwich University in 1959, Lt. Pierpan has been serving in Germany for the past year.

READSBORO, Vt. -- The Readsboro Fire Department held its annual banquet Oct. 10 at the Mt. View Restaurant in North Adams. Honorary members were recognized at the banquet for giving a total of 235 years of service. They were Clarence Ross, 57 years; Harry Lowe, 45 years; Jack Birch, 34 years; Mario Bolognani, 29 years; Rizieri Comai, 47 years; and Jerry Crowell, 23 years.

NORTH ADAMS -- Kelly Grogan, daughter of Patrick and Claire Grogan of North Adams, was inducted into The National Honor Society of Collegiate Scholars at Dartmouth College. The society is a highly selective, national, non-profit honors organization that recognizes first and second year undergraduate students who excel academically.

NORTH ADAMS -- In conjunction with National Business Women’s Week, the Northern Berkshire Business and Professional Women’s Club will honor Heather Put nam, executive director of the Berkshire Regional Employ ment Board, as their 2002-03 Woman of Achievement. Putnam was chosen because of her ingenuity and dedication to her efforts to encourage young people to stay in the area after high school and/or college.
