50 years ago today

ADAMS -- Frederick Zieba, of 28 Grove St., is the richer by $50. He is one of five General Electric Co. employees who have received crisp new $50 bills from the company for outstanding ideas. Mr. Zieba, a senior drafting designer in the power transformer engineering department, suggested a change in the method of making some electrical connections. NORTH ADAMS -- A North Adams airman will have his second Christmas this year thousands of miles nearer to Santa Claus’ base at the North Pole. He is Airman 2nd Class David Bergeron, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Carsno of 37 Phelps Ave., who has arrived at Fort Churchill, an air force base on Hudson Bay in Manitoba, Canada, for a year of duty. Airman Bergeron is a teletype operator in the Air Force communications network.

25 years ago today

CLARKSBURG -- Frank Zoltek beat Jim Cariddi Jr. 6-up to win the 1987 North Adams Country Club President’s Cup. Zoltek, who was 4-under when the match ended, eagled the par-4 12th (third hole) on the nine hole layout. Zoltek made it to the finals by beating Herb Johnson. Cariddi reached the final match with a win over Steve Senecal.

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Williams College President Francis Oakley has named Bruce Kieffer, associate president of German and chair of the department of German and Russian, as the first director of the new Center for Foreign Languages,

Literatures and Cultures, established last year. Dr. Kieffer has taught German at Williams since 1978.

WILLIAMSTOWN -- The Western Section Equestrian Qualifying Tournament was hosted by Oakhollow Farm/Equus Therapeutic Inc. in Williamstown on Oct. 13. Earning gold medals were Noel Gilson, Carrie Piaggi, Sierra Stanfield and Betsy Hurley. Earning silver medals were Ed Gehan, Rossi Linton and Tracy Salvadore.

NORTH ADAMS -- The Special Olympics Massa chusetts Senior Sports Classic was held Oct. 11-12 in Cape Cod. Racewalker Jean Mas chino earned gold medals in the 25- and 50-meter events. Joanne King and Kate Ryan took gold medals in the golf skills event. Noel Gilson and Carol Eay earned silvers in the golf skills event.
