NORTH ADAMS -- Denim Depot, a new store specializing in new and gently-worn denim jeans and other denim products, will celebrate its grand opening Saturday.
Owner Thomas Quinton, of Williamstown, said the store, located in the former T&T Tailor shop at the Oasis Plaza, 152 American Legion Drive, will not only sell new denim items, but also offer residents a chance to consign their gently-used denim.
"I want to provide people with an affordable alternative for denim clothing," he said Tuesday. "Pretty much everyone has denim in their wardrobe. It's kind of a staple now. A lot of guys, including myself, like wearing denim to work, but they don't like to pay the prices in stores for something I'm going to be working in. The last time I went into a store to buy a pair of new Levis, they were $45 a pair."
Quinton added, "Our prices start as low as $7 or $8 for a pair of jeans. I think the most expensive price we have is $15 for a pair."
The store is currently stocked with new designer jeans for men and women, "pre-loved" men's and women's jeans, along with a variety of denim shirts, skirts, jackets and children's clothing.
"I already have a couple of bargain racks with lower-priced pre-owned designer jeans for men and women already set up in the store," he said. "As time goes on, we'll add new things as well. I have some recycled denim backpacks coming in, along with some denim carry-all bags. I'm also expecting some denim
"We'll also be taking consignments, which will allow people to get rid of those jeans in their closets that don't fit any more and make a little money. People who put items on consignment will get 40 percent of the sale."
Quinton, who previously owned "The Dirty Dog," a pet grooming business on Tyler Street in Pittsfield and a video and stereo store in the city during the 1980s, said he was attracted to the store's location because of its proximity to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and the other businesses within the plaza.
"It's a really good spot next to Angelina's and South Beach Tanning," he said. "It's a very busy spot. I realize any type of business in this type of economy is going to be hard, but I thought I'd give it a try. It's close to the college and may help out the students. I remember what it was like to be in college and try to save every penny I could."
To welcome customers during Denim Depot's grand opening, Quinton said he's running a special: Buy two pairs and get a third pair of equal or lesser value for 50 percent off.
