50 years ago today

NORTH ADAMS -- Patricia Prevey of North Adams has been appointed instructor of women’s physical education and dean of women at the North Adams State College. She succeeds Ruth Tangley Laliberte, who resigned at the end of the first semester after her marriage. Mrs. Prevey was previously a faculty member at Mt. Greylock Regional High School in Williamstown. WILLIAMSTOWN -- Dr. Guilford Spencer, a member of the Williams College Faculty since 1957, has been named chairman of the mathematics department. He succeeds Prof. Donald Richmond, chairman since 1941, who becomes 65 this year. Dr. Spencer came to Williams as an associate professor in 1957 and was given tenure in 1960.

NORTH ADAMS -- Northern Berkshire Youth Hockey Squirts beat Sheffield 8-2 recently. For the Squirts, Trevor Bayliss had two goals and Scott Cummings, Paul Carlson, Aaron Girgenti, Jarrett Bayliss, David Catelotti and Marshall Maxwell each had one. Paul Cantarella was the winning goalie.

NORTH ADAMS -- A four-goal performance by Stuart Grande helped the GE Credit Union Flames to 7-3 win over the C&S Construction Whalers in Northern Berkshire Youth Hockey. Trevor Bayliss added two goals and two assists for the winners and Brian Brandy had the other goal. Paul Cantarella scored twice and assisted once for the Whalers and Paul Carlson had a goal and an

ADAMS -- Glory Whipple of North Adams has joined Steepleview Realty as a new sales associate. She comes from a background in the homecare industry. She was a full-time employee with CompCare/VNA of Northern Berkshire for six years until starting her own business, Senior Services, in 1997. She received her real estate training through Gateway School of Real Estate.

FLORIDA -- Ten students competed in the final round of the National Geography Bee sponsored by the Florida PTG on Jan. 13. Justin Burdick was winner of the school-level bee and received a $50 savings bond and advanced to the next level. Runner-up was Shauna Lavigne. Other students competing were Heath Tisdale, Hannah Randall, Samantha Beverly, Brett Gelinas, Brady Downey, Julie Menard, Austin Clark and Caitlan Connelly.
