50 years ago today

ADAMS -- Seven contestants for the annual junior prize speaking contest at Adams Memorial High School were chosen at try-outs yesterday in the school auditorium. They are Jane Bennett, Douglas Burnett, Alan Champagne, Donna Frost, Alice Jaworski, Frances Murphy and Stephen Ramocki.

NORTH ADAMS -- Patricia Perras of 65 Park Ave., first student to complete North Adams Hospital’s new school of anesthesiology, has passed the state and national boards of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. This means she is a registered nurse anesthetist. Miss Perras is employed at the North Adams Hospital where she administers the anesthesia to surgery patients in the operating room.

ADAMS -- Three persons have filed nomination papers for two three-year seats on the board of selectmen. George LeSage and incumbents George Haddad and Barbara Meczywor will vie for the two seats, according to Town Clerk Paul Hutchinson. The annual town election will take place May 2.

CLARKSBURG -- Valentine decorations added a romantic touch to the selection of the king, queen and court during the Clarksburg Elementary School Winter Carnival dance. The king and queen were Ian McArthur and Missy Scholtz. Members of the court were Shannon Toye, Joey Prenguber, Trista O’Neill, Jill LaBombard, Walter Stred, Matthew Hunt, Paul Norman and Michael Hein.

WILLIAMSTOWN -- At its annual meeting on Jan. 19, members of the Hoosic River Watershed Association elected five new directors who will serve on the organization’s board. Jamie Art, Eileen Gloster, Drew Jones, Kevin Moran and Irving Tanzman will join current board members Roger Bolton, Alex Brooks, Lisa Carey Moore, Mary Ellen Cohane, Tom Ennis, Tom Hyde, Ernie LeClaire, Heather Linscott, Tom McHugh, Jay Merselis and Lauren Stevens.

ADAMS -- Springfield College has named local residents to the dean’s list for academic excellence for the fall term. Local residents are Kelly Klein of Adams, a senior majoring in athletic training; Dawn Whitman of Adams, a junior majoring in athletic training; Tracy Blair of Clarksburg, a senior majoring in rehabilitation disability studies; and Shaunna Crockwell of North Adams, a senior majoring in physical therapy.
