50 years ago today

STAMFORD -- Pvt. Timothy Haun, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Haun of Main Road, has completed his eight weeks of basic Army training at Fort Dix, N.J. He will leave there Saturday for Fort Bennington, Ga., where he will receive training in mechanics. Pvt. Haun has been a member of the North Adams National Guard unit since Oct. 10, 1962. NORTH ADAMS -- Two area student nurses at the Bishop Memorial School of Nursing at Pittsfield General Hospital will leave Monday to begin 12 weeks of study and clinical experience in psychiatric nursing at Medfield State Hospital in Harding. They are Judith Archambault, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hermenegild Archambault of 37 First St., Williamstown, and Anne Tassone, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Tassone of 229 River St., North Adams.

NORTH ADAMS -- Army National Guard Private Wayne Forrest, son of Diane and Armand Rivard of 98 Beaver St., has completed one station unit training (OSUT) at the U.S. Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, Ga. OSUT is a 12 week period which combines basic combat training and advanced individual training. Completion of this course qualifies the soldier as a light-weapons infantryman and as an indirect-fire crewman.

ADAMS -- Nicole Vallieres, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Vallieres of 5 Fryc Lane, took first place in the eight to nine-year-old division at the Western

Massachusetts Hoop Shoot in Chicopee Saturday. She previously won the Hoop Shoot sponsored by the Adams Lodge 1335 Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. On Feb. 20, she will compete at the state finals at Bentley College.

WILLIAMSTOWN -- The Williamstown Chamber of Commerce has announced the following new board members for three-year terms. They are Margaret Cating, assistant manager of marketing at The Orchards; Olivier Glattfelder, innkeeper at The Porches; Paul Hopkins, manager of employee relations at North Adams Regional Hospital; Kate Philbin, marketing and public relations manager at The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute; and Don Westall, broker/owner of Alton and Westall Agency.

READSBORO, Vt. -- After two straight years as the school runner-up, Drew Boudreau, a seventh grader at Readsboro Central School, won the school-level competition of the National Geography Bee at a school-level assembly on Jan. 9. He bested sixth-grader Kessie Voulgarakis in a sudden-death, tie-breaking round. Other finalists were Kris Thayer, Karmen Whitham, Rorey Femenella, Tom Massi, Amber Hartman and Ronin Magnussen.
