NORTH ADAMS -- Twelve men and two women have signed up for the course in the Art of Self-Defense scheduled to open Tuesday at the North Adams YMCA. The women are Clare Therrien and Jo-Ann Troia. The men are William Petrie, Warren Randall, Tony Hall, James Rhodes, Donald Drawec, Robert Perry, Ronald Pollone, Thomas DePollo, Joseph Bellows, Lawrence McNeil, Paul Danis and Norman Fredette. ADAMS -- Airman 2C. James Piscioneri of the U.S. Air Force arrived in Adams Thursday night from Turkey, where he has been stationed since August, 1961, to spend a three-week leave with his mother, Mrs. Edwin Biros of 78 Friend St. Airman Biros enlisted in the Air Force in February 1961 and had basic training at Lackland Base, San Antonio, Texas.

POWNAL, Vt. -- Jennifer Davis, daughter of Richard and Melissa Davis of Pownal, has been selected to compete in the state finals for the title of Vermont’s Favorite Pre-Teen. The competition will be held June 4 at Killington Village Resort. Jennifer is 11 years old and is in the sixth grade at Pownal Elementary School.

ADAMS -- Forty-three high school students, nominated for a statewide award as the "Outstanding Vocational Technical Student" in Massachusetts, were honored at a dinner in Worcester on Feb. 11. The local nominee was Timothy Shepard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shepard of 14 Quaker St.

He is a senior in the Business Data Processing program at C.H. McCann Technical School in North Adams.

NORTH ADAMS -- A Drury High School musician has been selected to participate in this year’s Massachusetts All-State Music Festival. Bill Marie Taft, daughter of Janet and William Taft of North Adams, will be a member of this year’s saxophone section in the All-State Concert Band. This will be her first trip to All-State.

NORTH ADAMS -- The annual meeting of the First Baptist Church of North Adams opened with a welcome by Rev. Joseph DeCosta, pastor, following worship services. Newly-elected and continuing in office are: Andrew Etman, moderator; Ronald Shartrand, vice moderator; Frances Czarnecki, treasurer; Linda Neal, assistant treasurer/financial secretary; Roberta Johnson, church clerk; and Brenda Gabel, assistant clerk.
