WILLIAMSTOWN -- John Shaw, 19, son of Williams basketball coach Alex Shaw and Mrs. Shaw of Baxter Road, left for Lackland Air Force Base at San Antonio, Texas, where he will start basic training in the Air Force. He will specialize in radio and communications. Shaw attended Cape Cod Prep School and Mt. Greylock Regional High School prior to his enlistment. FLORIDA -- The Florida School basketball team defeated Brayton School, 40-7. Ronald Briggs and William Poirot each scored 14 points, Wesley Burdick scored four, and Ricky Paoletti, Gary Burdick, James Cummings and Michael LeClair each scored two.

NORTH ADAMS -- Shawn Serre, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Birkland of 90 Meadow St., was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Syracuse University. He is a member of the senior class and is majoring in electronic media production in The Newhouse School of Public Communications. He graduated with honors from Drury Senior High School in 1984.

NORTH ADAMS -- Two local foul shooters came home with a second- and third-place finish from the state Elks Hoop Shoot finals at Bentley College in Waltham. Nicole Vallieres of Adams, representing the Adams Lodge of Elks, finished second in the age 8-9 division. Amy Estes of Clarksburg, representing the North Adams Lodge of Elks, finished third in the age 10-11 group.

CHESHIRE -- Tom Oxton didn’t become the first wrestler to win state title in Hoosac Valley’s history, but he did raise the bar for the two-year program. The Hurricane junior reached the semifinals of the 145-pound weight class and ended up taking fourth place in the Division 3 State Wrestling Championships last weekend at Burlington High School.

CHESHIRE -- The Hoosac Valley girls took home a 10th-place finish at the Western Mass. Swim Championships at Springfield College. The Hurricanes managed to resent school records in both the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. In the medley relay, Danielle Wineberg, Kara Senecal, Libby Ariazi and Renee Kruszyna broke the previous record and in the freestyle relay, Kruszyna, Ariazi, Senecal and Amanda Krutiak broke the previous record.
