50 years ago today

NORTH ADAMS -- Two members of Mark Hopkins 4-H Clubs have been selected to represent the clubs at the Berkshire 4-H Demonstration Day program to be held in Pittsfield.

They are Maria Baker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Baker of 35 East Quincy St., a member of the Nimble Thimblers sewing club, and Carolyn Horn, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Horn of 243 Church St., a member of the Mixit and Fixit cooking club. ADAMS -- Wilfred Kittler Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Kittler of 25 East St., has been chosen one of the four contestants to represent Berkshire County in the annual science count down sponsored by Lowell Institute of Technology.

He was previously chosen winner at C.T. Plunkett Junior High School in the annual count-down oral quiz.

25 years ago today

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Five assistant professors at Williams College have been promoted to associate professors, with tenure. They are Emily Apter, romance languages; David Dethier, geology; Gail Hershatter, history; Williams Lenhart, computer science; and William Wootters, physics.

All five began teaching at Williams in 1982.

ADAMS -- The law firm of Donovan & O’Connor in Adams has announced that Paul Vrabel became a partner in the firm on Jan. 1.

He received his law degree from Suffolk University in 1979 and before joining Donovan & O’Connor as an associate in 1983,

Vrabel served as an assistant district attorney for the Berkshire County District 1980-83.

NORTH ADAMS -- Five area students have been named to the dean’s list at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., for the fall semester.

Local students include Anson Adams of Pownal and Joel Habel of North Adams, who are undeclared engineering majors; Matthew Lamb of North Adams and Erik Tekin of Lanesboro, both majoring in industrial and management engineering; and Mauricio O’Connell of Williamstown, majoring in mechanical engineering.

NORTH ADAMS -- In YMCA Girls Basketball action, the Grade 7-8 Elks All-Stars defeated a CYC team, 58-44. Erica Cahoon led all scorers with 16, followed by Meagan Bullett and Lindsay Lincoln with 13 each. Jenna Gazaille played outstanding defense with seven steals, and Danielle Thomas and Jordan DeGrenier were tough on the board with eight rebounds each.
