NORTH ADAMS -- Mariann Coughlin, daughter of Mrs. Donald Coughlin of 1034 Massachusetts Ave., has been selected for a biography in Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges at Boston University where she is a senior in the School of Education. Selection was based on outstanding contribution to student activities and high academic achievement. NORTH ADAMS -- Earl Williams Jr., 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Williams of Walker Street, left yesterday to begin nine weeks of basic training at the Great Lakes (Ill.) Naval Training Station after enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He signed up for a minority enlistment, which means he will be discharged the day before his 21st birthday.

CHESHIRE -- Darienne Hosley, daughter of E. David and Lea Hosley of Cheshire, a Hoosac Valley High School clarinetist, has successfully completed requirements to perform in the 1988 Western District Junior High Music Festival. After her December audition, she was selected to perform in her second consecutive Western District Concert Band.
NORTH ADAMS -- Pi Lambda Theta, the national honor society and professional association in education, initiated eleven new members into the local chapter of Gamma Mu at North Adams State College. ADAMS -- Jonathan Peterson, son of James and Gail Peterson of Adams, and Aaron Mensh, son of Ronald and Elaine Mensh of Williamstown, have been named College Scholars for academic excellence during the fall term at Middlebury College. A College Scholar represents the highest level of academic achievement at Middlebury.
NORTH ADAMS -- Mass MoCA executive director Joseph Thompson is among six recipients of this year’s Commonwealth Awards, the state’s highest honors in the arts, sciences and humanities. He was cited for developing North Adams-based Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art as "an important economic development catalyst for the region."
