WILLIAMSTOWN -- Staff Sgt. Kerwin Stackpoole, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Stackpoole of Maple Street, has won an appointment to the U.S. Army aviation school at Fort Rucker, Alabama. He will undergo a 42-week fixed-wing flight training course.. WILLIAMSTOWN -- James Agnew, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Clarke Agnew of Berkshire Drive, has completed training at the Navy’s Pre-flight School at the Pensacola (Fla.) Naval Air Station and been commissioned an ensign in the Naval Reserve. He will now continue on to flight school at Pensacola and on the successful completion of flight training will be awarded the gold wings of a naval aviator.

ADAMS -- The St. Mary’s basketball team was the winner in the Adams Church League. Members of the team are Heath Haas, Todd Sondrini, Aaron Astorino, Derik Silva, Jim Witherell, Rich Dodge, George Shelterly, Mike Bissaillon, Paul Sweet, Aaron Martel, Roy Richardson, Dave Szpila, Bob Grebhardt and Keith Toth.
NORTH ADAMS -- The YMCA Bettas recently competed in the Western Mass. YMCA swimming championships. Justin Filiault and Kriste Kleiner led the way for the Bettas, winning all three of their events. WILLIAMSTOWN -- William Wagner, Brown Professor of History and chairman of the history department at Williams College, has been awarded a Faculty World Fellowship. The $12,500 research grant, together with a Fellowship for College Teachers from the National Endowment for the Humanities, will enable him to work on a book manuscript.
CLARKSBURG -- Local students were named to the fall dean’s list at Westfield State College. They are Mark Bailey of 770 River Road, Clarksburg, who is majoring in criminal justice, and Amanda Chilson of 70 Kemp Ave., North Adams, who is majoring in movement science.
