NORTH ADAMS - A 25year-old city man has been charged with rape after police say he used drugs to facilitate a sexual assault on a 17-year-old female victim earlier this week. Brenton C. Rohane, 25, of Union Street was charged with a single count of rape in Northern Berkshire Court on Wednesday and was transferred to Berkshire County Jail & House of Correction, where he's being held on $50,000 bail. The alleged rape occurred late Monday night at Rohane's Union Street apartment, according to police reports.
North Adams Regional Hospital (NARH) staff alerted police to the alleged assault after the alleged victim had arrived there complaining of pain Tuesday afternoon.
According to a police report by Det. John LeClair, of North Adams Police Department, the alleged victim said she'd gone to her friend Brenton's house Monday night where he provided her with liquor and half of a pill, which he called Melatonin, after she complained of stress.
The pill made her woozy and she "passed out" on a piece of furniture in Rohane's room, the report states. She was then in and out of consciousness, and claims she woke at one point to Rohane using a small needle to inject her with an unknown drug that worsened her disorientation. She later came to several times while Rohane was allegedly raping her, the report says.
According to the alleged victim, she awoke half clothed in Rohane's bed, where he also was, and "freaked out," later going to NARH.
LeClair notes in his report that police observed puncture wounds "consistent" with the alleged victim's description of the injection on her right forearm.
Police received and executed a search warrant on Rohane's home Wednesday after the arrest, and the report says Rohane requested medical attention for his elbow, which he said had become inflamed due to a narcotics injection prior to their arrival.
Rohane served nine months in a house of correction in 2006-07 on a breaking and entering charge, and his record also lists probation for assault and battery.
A bind-over hearing has been scheduled for June 18, with Rohane's case expected to be taken up in Berkshire Superior Court before that date.
