LANESBOROUGH -- There's more than the sound of school bells to ring in the end of summer vacation: A family and student-oriented event with music, entertainment and a focus on healthy lifestyles for youth will take place Friday, Aug. 30, at The Berkshire Mall.
"Back to School the Healthy Way" is open all in the Berkshires and beyond and will be hosted from 4 to 7 p.m. at the mall in the former Old Navy store.
Back to School the Healthy Way is sponsored by Yarmosky Pediatric Dentistry, with locations in Pittsfield and Great Barrington, and the North Adams Transcript, The Berkshire Eagle, Advocate, Bennington (Vt.) Banner, Manchester (Vt.) Journal and Brattleboro (Vt.) Reformer, the news organizations that make up New England Newspapers Inc. and its Newspapers In Education program.
The event will include music -- from country to folk to gospel -- by David Grover, Ayana George, Nostalgia, Zion and Destiny Music Group. There will also be performances by Youth Alive and The Y Gymnastics team. The Pittsfield YMCA also will be conducting break-dancing and gymnastics workshops.
Healthy-living information for students also will be available.
The event is free, but donations will be accepted to help provide backpacks to be distributed by agencies that include the United Way and Kid Zone.
