ADAMS -- Airman Alan Romano, 17, son of Marie Romano of 8 Thompson St., has completed his basic Air Force Training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, and has been reassigned to Chanute Air Force Base, Ill., for technical training as an aircraft mechanical equipment repairman. Airman Romano enlisted late in June and reported July 3 at Lackland for his basic.
WILLIAMSTOWN -- Pvt. Dennis Austin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Austin of Hancock Road, completed a five-week helicopter maintenance course at the Aviation Center at Fort Rucker, Ala. on Aug. 16. During the course he received instruction in the maintenance of single-engine helicopters. Pvt. Austin enlisted in March and had basic training at Fort Dix, N.J.

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Henricus Bergmans has been appointed resident manager of The Orchards. He will assume operational responsibilities on Thursday. His wide range of experience in the hotel trade includes the position of General Manager of The Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge as well as ownership of two small inns in the northeast. Bergmans has been with The Orchards for the past year and is currently assistant general manager.
CLARKSBURG -- Brenda Hewitt of Clarksburg has earned the designation of Certified Dental Assistant, which was awarded to her on July 28, after she passed an examination. In addition to passing the test, consisting of some 300 questions, a candidate must meet certain eligibility requirements of education and experience. Hewitt is a graduate of the dental assisting program at Charles H. McCann Technical School.

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Karen Kwitter, professor of Astronomy and chairwoman of the department at Williams College, along with her colleagues Reginald Dufour of Rice University and Richard Henry of the University of Oklahoma, has been given a $77,000 grant from the Space Telescope Science Institute toward use of the Hubble Space Telescope.
NORTH ADAMS -- Heather Lemoine has been appointed the director of the Bridges Program for the Memory Impaired at EPOCH Assisted Living at Melbourne. She is a registered nurse who has been unit supervisor for an Alzheimer’s/dementia unit at Sweet Brook Car Center in Williamstown. She was also previously employed at North Adams Regional Hospital.
