NORTH ADAMS -- Albert Shays, son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Shays of 13 Millard Ave., stationed with the U.S. Army in Schweinfurt, Germany, has been promoted to the grade of specialist four. He received his promotion after completing a course of study in radar. NORTH ADAMS -- A North Adams girl is the writer of a letter chosen for publication in the October issue of Jack and Jill Magazine, children’s publication. She is Joan Mapes, 9, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mapes of 1095 Mohawk Trail. The editors said her letter was chosen from among hundreds mailed to the publication by young people all over the world.

ADAMS -- Stanley Fryc of Adams has been named as U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy’s town coordinator for the Adams area. He is a Town Meeting member and formerly served his community as the town moderator.
ADAMS -- Julie Jette, Frederick Pevey III and Daniel Silvia of Hoosac Valley High School have been designated Commended Students in the 1989 National Merit Scholarship Program. These students, all seniors, placed in the top 50,000 of more than one million participants.

NORTH ADAMS -- At Lyndon State College convocation on Sept. 16, David Wall, son of David and Kathleen Wall of North Adams, received the Gil and Avid Ford Scholarship in Meteorology. He is majoring in meteorology.
ADAMS -- The residence at 6 East St. has been returned to a bed and breakfast and is ready and open for business. Ryan Kemble bought the home in June. In the 1980s the large Victorian home was known as the Butternut Inn. Kemble has turned it into the Mount Greylock Inn.
