NORTH ADAMS -- Finalists in the Drury High School freshman speaking contest were announced. The ninth graders who will compete for cash prizes at an Oct. 30 assembly were picked by a committee from the English Department. The contestants are Darlene Batease, Jacqueline Fenton, Howard Horn, Marie Mancuso, Karen McKane, Robert Owczarski, Mary Ann Scerbo, Deborah Thompson, Arlyn Weeks and Roger Wood.
ADAMS -- Kathleen Gallagher, daughter of Helen Gallagher of 12 Grove St., has enlisted in the U.S. Women’s Army Corps and is taking basic training at Ft. McClellan, Ala. After eight weeks at the U.S. WAC Center, she will go to Fort Sam Houston, Texas for training in the medical field.

WILLIAMSTOWN -- Shaun Buckler has been appointed assistant comptroller for budgeting at Williams College. Buckler comes to Williams from Princeton University, where he served for six years as the assistant to the controller for financial reporting, gifts and budget analysis.
NORTH ADAMS -- In North Adams Youth Football, the North Adams Cowboys defeated Lanesborough 28-0. For the Cowboys, Aaron Dupuis scored two touchdowns and Joe Robare and Stan Shoestock added one apiece. Sparking the defensive effort were Dupuis, Shoestock and Chris Messina with six unassisted tackles each, and Robare, Tim Briggs and Duanne Congleton, each with five.

CHESHIRE -- In Cheshire youth football, Cheshire lost to Adams, 28-24. Ryan Joppich had three touchdowns and 250 yards behind the offensive line of Norm Malloy, Mike Fillion, Steve Ferro, Tyler Krutiak, Trevor Bailey and Eric Chipchase. Josh Clairmont scored the other touchdown for Cheshire.
NORTH ADAMS -- In North Adams Pee Wee football, North Adams lost to Lanesboro, 20-14. Matt Braman led the North Adams offense with a 70-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion. Stephen Tworig added his own 70-yard TD. Defensively, Zach Gilman, Jared Shartrand and Jake Ostrowski made good tackles.
