CLARKSBURG -- Harry Messier Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Messier of North Eagle Street, has been promoted to the rank of major in the U.S. Army. He is stationed at the Army Reserve Center at West Palm Beach, Fla. He began his military career in 1942 when he enlisted as an officer candidate. NORTH ADAMS -- Layman’s Sunday will be observed at the First Baptist Church Sunday with four men of the parish participating in the services. Taking part will be Arthur Wylde, chairman of Christian Education; Arthur Daniels, a life deacon of the church; John Ballentine, superintendent of the Church School; and Warren Baker, chairman of the board of deacons, who will preach the sermon.

ADAMS -- Navy Seaman Recruit Michael O’Brien, son of Michael and Catherine O’Brien of 8 Gavin Ave., has completed recruit training at the Recruit Training Center in San Diego, Calif. He studied seamanship, close order drill and Naval history and first aid. O’Brien joined the Navy in July, 1988.
ADAMS -- Lynn Singer of Adams has been appointed by the board of directors of Western Massachusetts Girl Scout Council to serve as chairwoman of Association 3 (Adams, Savoy and Cheshire) until June, 1989. She is currently a consultant on the service team and a leader of a Brownie and Daisy Troop.

NORTH ADAMS -- Deep Associates Insurance Agency Inc. has hired a new insurance agent. Carrie A. Millard, a recent graduate of Siena College in Loudonville, NY began working in early June. Millard has attended classes in Framingham and taken the Property and Casualty Licensing exam in Springfield and is now a licensed insurance agent.
NORTH ADAMS -- Shaun Sutliff and Madeline Nagy were the overall male and female winners in the 5-kilometer event at the 26th annual Sam Gomez Road Race. The event benefitted Northern Berkshire Habitat for Humanity. Paul Shepardson was second in the men’s division, while Jude Loftus was third. For the women, April Marko was second and Lisa Matilla was third.
