It's nearly that time of year again: The annual Thunderbolt Ski Race is a month away, and alongside the Thunderbolt Ski Runners' incredibly successful event, the Thunderfest celebration is again set to take place downtown following the harrowing competition.
While many winter sports enthusiasts are still trying to forget the pitiful precipitation of last winter and the cancellation of the race that resulted, it looks like there's a good chance the snow will be in place to allow this year's race to go on. Yes, we know there are warm temperatures forecast for this weekend, but there's still plenty of time for the mercury, and the snow, to drop.
In an effort to grow the groundswell before the race and festival, the town has wisely announced expanded hours for the Thunderbolt Ski Museum at the Adams Visitors Center. The one-of-a-kind exhibit is regularly open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. However, in answer to the anticipation building for the event (an estimated 1,500 spectators were drawn to the last race alone), additional hours have been added, and the museum is now also open until 6 p.m. on Fridays, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays. This continues through to race weekend on Feb. 9.
