ADAMS -- More than 500 people grabbed dinner at Turn Hall on Saturday to support a resident who recently lost his home to a fire, a turnout that raised more than $8,000.
Robert Wadsworth's 18 Brown St. residence was lost Jan. 4 due to an electrical fire, and friends organized the spaghetti dinner.
"We had 188 people say they were coming on Facebook, so I was expecting around 120 to come," Vince Hartman, one of the organizers, said Sunday. "Then [the time of the dinner] rolled around and the place blew up."
After doors opened, the line grew until it stretched down the street.
"You know Berkshire County is a wonderful place to live when you've suffered a tragedy," said Shelly Fachini, another organizer.
Hartman thanked George and Amber Will and Northern Berkshire Catering, who offered their services free.
"They did great," Hartman said. "Dinners were flying out of the kitchen."
He also thanked all those who donated to the Chinese auction that accompanied the meal and attendees.
A hand-made guitar by Adams resident Nick Lenski, valued at $2,000 and donated to the cause, is expected to be sold within three weeks by Bounti-Fare Restaurant owner David Nicholas.
Nicholas and Tom Corrigan played live music at Saturday's event.
Wadsworth, a corrections officer at Berkshire County Jail & House of Correction, made a short speech thanking everyone who came.
"He was very humbled and very happy,"
Berkshire County Sheriff Thomas Bowler, who works with Wadsworth, also spoke.
