STAMFORD, Vt. -- A special town meeting will be held in October to determine if residents want the town to continue with a sidewalk enhancement project on Main Road.
The Select Board set the meeting for 7 p.m. on Oct. 11 at Stamford Elementary School after a petition for the meeting was submitted on Aug. 22.
"I have no problem holding a special town meeting so that everything is clear," Eunice Rice, chairwoman of the Select Board, said Thursday night.
The sidewalk project was originally approved by Town Meeting in 2006 at a larger scale than is currently being proposed. Town Meeting approved the small version of the project in 2007. The project is being paid for with a $200,000 federal grant, which includes a 20 percent, or $40,000, match from the town.
Prior to setting the special town meeting, the Select Board unanimously approved the most recent plans for the project, which involve replacing the sidewalk from Mill Road east to the former Blood property on Main Road.
Rice said the current plans bring the sidewalks a little closer to the center line of the road.
The Select Board also unanimously approved the tax rate for 2012, which was an overall decrease from 2011 by about 10 cents. The tax rate will include an education homestead rate of $1.1197 per $100 valuation and an education non-residential rate of $1.3498 per $100 valuation, which are both set by the state. The rates
In other business, Road Commissioner David Tatro updated the Select Board on two ongoing road projects.
He said the road widening and ditch work taking place involving the hill on Jepson Road is moving along, and he hopes to have it completed by next week.
Highway crews have also been crack sealing roads around town this week, he said.
Selectman Thomas Houghtaling, who led the organization of Stamford Family Day, which was held on Aug. 11, said the event committee will hold a meeting Wednesday, Aug. 29, and planning has already begun for next year.
"We’ve already secured the fireworks," he said.
