The June override is needed in part to fund $104,000 worth of salt, sand and overtime for snow and ice removal during the past winter. The rest is needed to fund expenses about to be covered by the last of the town's stabilization fund.
The balloting has been tentatively set for noon to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, at the Savoy Senior Center.
But first, the annual town meeting, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the fire station, will address the proposed $1.7 million budget for the coming year, which came in at $78,000 over last year's budget.
Some increases are an effort to make up for cuts to last year's spending after the override failed, such as a $2,000 increase for police safety salary, noted Sue McGrath, office manager and tax collector for Savoy.
More than $38,000 worth of increases is made up by the first payments on the town's two new fire trucks. One, purchased with a Homeland Security grant, is a one-time payment of $13,750, while the other is an annual payment of $25,000 that will shrink as the years progress.
Others are increases most other towns are facing, such as a $26,661 increase to the highway department and a $4,320 in school transportation costs, both related to the rising price of fuel.
"We're trying to recoup a little that we cut last year so we can continue to operate," McGrath said. "If the override fails, we will try again later for just the cost of snow and ice removal last winter because we have to pay that before we can set a tax rate."
