WILLIAMSTOWN -- After all Kent Hanson has accomplished so far as a high school athlete, there’s can’t be many more ways for the Mount Greylock senior to put his mark on Berkshire County athletics, but he found one of them Tuesday afternoon.
The Greylock boys’ lacrosse player scored the first goal in Berkshire County League history when he found the back of the cage from in tight just 1 minute, 23 seconds into the 4 p.m. league opener against Hoosac Valley. Taconic and St. Joe’s didn’t start until 4:30 p.m.
Hanson’s goal was just the beginning for an ultra-potent Mountie offense. They scored in rapid-fire style in the first half en route to a 20-3 victory.
"I didn’t expect to do that," he said. "We have a lot of good offensive players. I like to play offense but, I figured one of them would get it."
The offense proved throughout the first half just how many weapons it has at its disposal with seven different players finding the score sheet. Hanson accounted for three of the team’s 15 goals in the first half, while brothers Brett and Michael McCormack also notched first-half hat tricks. Hanson and Brett McCormack finished tied with four goals. McCormack got the edge in points when the onslaught was over, adding four assists to his total.
"I felt good. Just getting it out of the way, first varsity game, just felt great to be out there with all our teammates," Brett McCormack said. "We were all psyched up and ready to go. We just wanted to play to the best of our ability and hopefully keep that up throughout the season."
If they can keep up their scoring pace, the other six teams in the league will be in for a world of hurt.
The Mounties’ offense was so electric they enjoyed a six-goal lead with 5:37 left in the 12-minute opening quarter. The finished it with a 9-0 advantage. After Judge Duval -- who was back in his attack position after spending much of the first quarter on defense -- sparked the Hurricanes’ with their first varsity goal 49 seconds into the second quarter, Stephin Wallace followed suit 18 seconds later and suddenly Hoosac had some life.
Greylock sucked it right back out when Noah Kelley answered with his first varsity goal 10 seconds later and his second nine seconds after that. Greylock went on to score four more times in the half before Wallace scored with five seconds left.
"I’m not sure what to say about that," Hoosac coach John Duval said. "Getting off the bus, we just weren’t excited about playing lacrosse today.
"We just got to get better in every aspect of the game. We just got to improve, get out heads focused on the game and just get better every day."
The Mounties, though, were impressive in all phases. Their offense surely led the way, but from the midfielders to the defense to goalie Pat Malloy, they were as sound as could be expected for a season opener.
The midfielders quickly moved the ball upfield and jumped into the attack at any chance, while the defense kept Hoosac to the outside. When the Hurricanes did break through, Malloy was there to make the big save. His best came on a point-blank shot from Wallace with three minutes left in the second quarter.
"In a lot of the man-down scenarios he took a lot of shots," Greylock coach Jeff Stripp said. "What we look for is technique and I thought he did a nice job there."
