GREAT BARRINGTON -- Kalyn Alibozek likes running with the best cross country competitors in Berkshire County.

"I like that there are people in front of me, so I can push myself," she said at Monument Mountain Regional High School on Wednesday.

Here's the thing: She doesn't let many runners get in front of her.

Alibozek was the top North County finisher in the girls race, taking second place in 19 minutes, 46 seconds on the relatively flat, 3.06-mile course. Pittsfield's Lauren Farry won her sixth race this season, finishing in 19:22.

In girls duals, Hoosac beat Taconic (21-34) and Wahconah (24-31), but lost to Lenox (20-30) and Pittsfield (20-37); Pittsfield beat Lenox (25-30) and Wahconah (15-42); and Monument beat Taconic (18-45) and Wahconah (17-44).

In the boys race, Hoosac's Travis Ciempa was third in 16:59. Lenox's Scott Carpenter won in 16:19, followed by Pittsfield's Dan Brien in 16:49.

In boys duals, Lenox beat Hoosac (23-34) and Pittsfield (23-32); Hoosac beat Taconic (25-32), but lost to Pittsfield (27-30) and Wahconah (27-30); and Monument beat Taconic (18-43) but lost to Lenox (26-29).

Ciempa held off Brien by 2 seconds at home last week, but saw Brien pull away at the 2-mile mark Wednesday.

"I beat him last week and I wanted to stay with him," Ciempa said. "The open field goes fast, so I started out fast."

Brien said his head cold from last week had subsided, but he still

wasn't 100 percent.

"Me and Ciempa were trying to move up, and ended up catching Tucker [McNinch of Lenox]," Brien said. "Toward the last mile, we were all trying to pick it up and see who could finish the strongest."

Jared Haley was the next-fastest Hurricane on the boys side, taking 12th place in 17:54. He was followed by Trevor Ciempa (16th, 18:01).

Alibozek said the course was pretty easy, despite the wet conditions. Her goal was to establish her position in the opening mile that ran in front of the school.

"I just try to set myself up for where I want to be throughout the entire race in the beginning, because I feel like it's easier and you don't have to worry as much," Alibozek said.

Sydnee Gallup was the second Hurricane to finish, taking 15th in 21:53. Hannah Folino was 21st in 22:23.

"I feel they're all doing really good," Alibozek said of her teammates. "I saw three in a row coming in, so it's good that they're getting in packs. They're really improving."
