PITTSFIELD -- St. Joseph's boys' basketball team had an 18-point halftime lead Friday night.
Hoosac Valley nearly made that lead disappear with a 29-point third quarter, but St. Joe's weathered the Hurricanes' storm behind Tank Roberson's career-high 36 points for a 68-65 win at the Boys and Girls Club on Friday night.
Crusaders coach Paul Brindle believes it's the first time a team of his has ever given up more than 20 points in a quarter.
"I think a couple of things were going through," he said. "One, they had a big, big lead; two, offensively, we were getting very good looks and the ball just wasn't falling for us.
"We were just giving up easy baskets. Hoosac, to their credit, [was] patient ... and worked themselves right back into the game."
Luckily for the Crusaders, they had held Hoosac to 17 first-half points -- six of them in the final minute of Hoosac's eight-point second quarter.
Lavante Wiggins put up a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds for the St. Joe's. Matt Braman led the Hurricanes with 24 points, while Corey Puccio had 14 and Trevor Alibozek added 13 more.
St. Joe's, which plays Pittsfield at 2 p.m. in the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament, was just 10 for 20 from the free-throw line in the second half.
"To beat teams moving forward, we've got to just be more consistent," Brindle said.
